Hotel Massena - Nice

The public areas of the hotel are nice (maybe 4 star if being very generous), but the rooms really let it down. Very basic. Clean, but very basic.

Location and room are fantastic. Modern room, clean, and spacious. Location is central and close to the square, amazing church and lot's of shopping and places to eat. This hotel was perfect, it was in a perfect location to the shopping, old town, promenade and daily market. We were upgrade at check in and the room was fine, there are much nicer rooms but this was a good value. If you take a left out of the hotel, there is a bakery just down and across the street with fresh bread etc. the action is to the right so […] we didn't discover this till the end of our stay. The hotel has a nice appearance, and I feel that I was given one of the older rooms. Unfortunately the reception staff were rude to us upon arrival and not helpful at all, it appeared that they were not wanting to welcoming us. The room was extremely small, and unfortunately badly lit with outside light, which made it very dull and depressing to sit […] in, night or day. The bathroom was rather pleasant however, it was big and well lit, with flooding of natural light. However, the tap when running had a really bad smell to it, and every time the tap was turned on, the smell returned. The room had a musty smell and this was present all day especially when the heating was turned on, which could not be adjusted it appeared, and although the hotel was very hot, the heating was on and as such cool air was not available on the air conditioning. Upon check out the reception staff were rude to us, and did not ask us about the stay, in fact they began to check us out on another persons room, and although I was trying to explain this to them, they appeared preoccupied to help us, yet they were supposed to be checking us out. I would not stay at this hotel again, yet I imagine many of the rooms would be in a better position and have more light and not smell. However, the beds were also uncomfortable and I felt that with the reception staff not being too welcoming I would not feel comfortable to raise any concerns, which is mainly why I did not raise any concerns throughout the stay. It was really great! Our first room for two was a bit small but very cozy. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. Love the location.... The Massena is located in a very convenient location to the Tram and many attractions in Nice. The Staff I would rate as fair. The room I had at first was okay but we paid extra which makes this hotel way overpriced for the services they provide. I you are a single person in a double room they will only provide you with one towel, even though you paid […] for a double. I had to complain about the cleanliness of my room and maid service had to come back and clean. The WIFI in this hotel is a joke! Just no other way to put it. I think this could be a very nice hotel if the staff and management would put more care into staff training and make some needed improvements to the rooms. Very dated. With that being said, if you are looking for an average hotel for a high price for Nice, then the Massena is your place. After all the complaining the staff corrected some of the problems and did give us a free breakfast. Just make sure you DO NOT get the small tiny double, I have been informed that they do not advertise it as a double anymore and is now a single room.. But price is still too high for what you get. Hotel Massena is over priced for what you get. You have to get one of the updated rooms. My friend who also had a room found hairs on his bathroom floor and his room was on the busy street and was very noisy. The hotel placed my Mother In Law in a small room that would barely qualify for a single room. You must insist on updated rooms and if you pay […] for a double insist on the double. Staff is somewhat helpful. The WIFI is the worst I have ever had in Europe. The Internet is free but you have to sit in a tiny booth on a wooden bench. Their services are fair. I would rate this hotel a 3 until some major changes are made. Also if you want air conditioning, open the window. We were told that they can only have heat or air at any single time. Really unusual. This one is past her prime. An old boutique/historic hotel seriously in need of work. The undulating floor throughout created an adventure course for us and our luggage. But the worst by far was the slamming of doors - you could hear everyone's coming and goings and that's not limited to external doors - the bathroom doors in the individual rooms could […] also be heard. However the bathroom themselves were of a decent standard. Attempts at decoration were meagre - the lovely half dozen original paintings in the foyer soon lost their appeal as they were replicated throughout with monotonous repetition (3 times from Reception to room). We had a very nice stay. Hotel is less than a 10min walk to the old city section and the beach. The bus station is less than 5min as well as the main plaza, where you can catch the tram. Shopping and restaurants/cafe are plentiful and close.

The location of the hotel is very good - close to train station and restaurants. We had two large suitcases plus two medium backpacks with us - the room barely held us (2 adults). We would strongly suggest reserving an upgraded room (not a "standard" or "classic")!

We were upgraded to a nice room with a balcony although there was not much of a view. It is close to the plaza and walking distance to everything including the water. Nice place in Nice but we stayed at so many nice places during our journey. Definitely better to book through hotels.com then in person

We stayed at Massena Hotel on our third visit to Nice and would highly recommend it for its location and helpful staff. It seems it is hard to find affordable and pleasant accommodation in Nice. We stayed at another hotel in Nice just the week prior which was only slightly less expensive than Massena but it was not nearly as comfortable and was not […] in the same great location as Massena. At Massena we were upgraded to a bigger room on arrival which was a good size and comfortable. The room is tiny, with just one bed which occupies 4/5 of the room, the bathroom is tiny, too; no hot water maker, internet connection is unstable (must relogin all the time). There is a great deal to like about the Massena Hotel. The location is first-rate, very close to Nice's old town, close to the metro and around the corner from Gallerie Lafayette, the city's best department store. I arrived around 10am on a Sunday morning and the staff was very accommodating - they offered coffee and a place to sit in the lobby and […] made some helpful suggestions about nearby businesses that were open. I know Nice fairly well but was very happy with their recommendations and courtesy. The rooms are modest in size and well appointed. The breakfast served at the hotel (10 euros if you book it when you arrive, 20 euros if ordered day by day) is good and is served until 10am. The public spaces as well as the rooms have been very well maintained; they appear to be recently upgraded. Television service in the room is good with moderate sized flat screen TVs and plenty of outlets for recharging electronic devices. The only drawback with the hotel is the WiFi - it's free, but you have to sign in every 15 minutes which is extremely annoying. For me, that was bothersome enough to give me pause about returning as I use WiFi a lot when traveling for business. Stayed here for 5 nights recently. Had booked traditional room and requested high floor with king bed and Laurent on check-in kindly provided us with a room on the 6th (top) floor. The room had a terrace with two chairs and a table and a recliner with a view of the city. The hotel did not appear to be too busy but it was the first week of feb. The bar/restaurant was quiet. Bed was comfortable. Room was quite warm at night. Shower was powerful enough and plenty of hot water. Did not opt for breakfast or other meals but did have a couple of drinks one evening and service was friendly and efficient. The lobby is nicely decorated and there is a computer for internet access and the reception will print your boarding pass if you email it to them. i stayed at hotel Massena on the last night of a 2 weeks' business trip allover France where we stayed in dreadful hotels. Arriving with the taxi and being welcomed by porters that swftly took care of my luggage just felt magical. i arrived early so i could not check in immediately however Reception informed Housekkeping to put my room in the top of […] their list so that it would be ready faster. I was upgraded to their second rom category so i do not know how the first room category that i booked for (attractive rate) looks like. the room i stayed was not very small like the majority of French hotel rooms, was e uiped with a big bathroom with a tub free wifi and flat screen TV. it is very centraly located and in general was the highlight of my entire trip. i look forward staying there again on my next visit to Nice. On arrival we were upgraded ( without asking for it) to a "privilege" room from a "tradition" . The room was freshly renovated, toilet separate from bathroom, everything new and gleaming. The lobby is elegant, the staff are friendly and welcoming. One caveat - on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays there is a night club across the street with people shrieking […] and laughing outside till 4 am. Ask for a room facing away from the street on those nights. Breakfast is included for a small extra charge if you are staying 2 nights or more. For one night it's expensive. There are a number of faults with this hotel including rather unfriendly reception staff, an overcrowded and overworked breakfast area and unwelcome noise from an adjacent nightclub. The rooms were as expected small but they were kept immaculately clean. While the breakfast room was small, the breakfasts themselves were more than adequate and very tasty […] - particularly the variety of breads. The noise was very unfortunate but it only really affected one of our couples who were at the side of the hotel. Those on the front had little disturbance. The big plus point of this hotel is its very central location close to Massena Square and main bus stops. This hotel is in a superb location; a short stroll to the best shopping in Nice, the old quarter or the beach. However it is situated on a very busy street cross roads with traffic lights. When we were there the temperatures were in the mid to upper 20's but the air conditioning was not on; only air recirculation. Opening the windows let in the traffic […] noise, including overnight and early morning deliveries by large lorries and the refuse collection. Worse still the noise of revellers tipping out of night clubs between 01:30 and 04:30 was intolerable. Closing the windows effectively shuts out the noise but the room got very warm. I must add that we were in a room at the corner of the hotel adjacent the roads. The hotel looks impressive and the public areas are very smart and clearly our landing had only recently been redecorated and recarpeted. Unfortunately our room, supposedly a superior was less so. Apart from a newish carpet the room looked tired and dated. We would expect the room to be a bit bigger and the furnishings to be of better quality. The curtains were old fashioned and did not close properly, the furniture was worn and inadaquate. The built in wardrobe was too small for a double room and we had to leave some of our clothes in the suitcase. The bathroom was very nicely finished but was alas let down by the location of the window; being over the bath next to the shower. You could not have a shower with the window open without being an exhibitionist to the apartments across the street. The shower was great; worked really well with good pressure and plenty of hot water. There was a separate loo. We did not take breakfast as we thought it over priced. There is not a guests lounge only seating in the foyer. It also caters for a lot of coach parties who seem to take over all the public areas! I wonder if this hotel truely merits 4* status. We are regular visitors to Nice and have stayed in better hotels for the same or less money. I would reservedly recommen Đọc thêm

This hotel gave us exactly what we were looking for. It had a modern reception area, bar was well decorated, maintained and very clean. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. Rooms are on the small side but this is the norm for most French Hotels. Location is excellent. If returning to Nice we would have no hesitation in staying here again.
