Royal York Brighton - Brighton

Ideal hotel for being in the centre of it all. Close to the beach, bars and the Brighton Centre. Very friendly staff, good clean place. There are areas that need attention, like most hotels of its age - the scaffold on the stairs was an interesting touch!

Hotel was in regency character and very clean. Staff were helpful. Room was acceptable size and clean but bed was uncomfortable and room was cold at night as window would not close. Friends stayed also and paid same for a room but theirs was much smaller with tiny windows. Mouldy smell on 2nd floor also made their room smell but ours on the 1st floor […] was ok. Sea view but coach station was outside window which didn't seem to stop all night! That along with the nightclub queue opposite proved to be noisy at night. Location is excellent - central to everything. Parking is horrendous. Didn't eat at the hotel. Hotel was expensive for what was offered in comparison to other brighton hotels we have stayed at. This hotel was better than we had expected after reading other reviews. Staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendly. Our room was quite large and overlooked the Steine. We were worried that it might be noisy at night but it was fine. The hotel is really close to the pier and Brighton sea front as well as The Lanes. The hotel has faded Edwardian grandeur which we like. The decor isn't perfect, but the rooms are a really good size, the bathrooms are clean and the shower is fast and hot. The windows open and the heating system works if it's cold. The bed is very comfortable. The staff are friendly and will go out of their way to help. Good points:- 5min walk to Pier and the Lanes. Loads of restaurants to eat in at reasonable prices-recommend 'Riddle and Finns' in the Lanes. Breakfast inc which started day off nicely. Friendly / approachable staff. Not so good points:- At check-in we were informed that there were no car parking facilities and near by parking would cost between £15-£18 […] per day. On entering our room we dropped the blinds to check the black-out rating. This was poor so we got moved to another room with black-out drapes instead of blinds. When it came to sleep there was an annoying LED light on the ceiling and light coming in from under the room door. We also realised that the bathroom lights were sensor controlled meaning they came on everytime we entered and stayed on for 'x'minutes after leaving - not good when you're sleepy in the middle of the night......... Due to the close location of the neighboroughing nightlife venue and overlooking the town's coach station your bed may have well as been on the street. Very uncomfortable night's sleep.

The staff was very helpful and welcoming. Great breakfast included. The hotel looked just like the pictures and the National express coach from Gatwick or Heathrow stops right behind the hotel so there are no transfers or long walk to the hotel as with the train station. Hotel was ideally located and the free continental breakfast was a bonus. There were a lot of marks on the wall below the windowsill though which took from the feel of the room. We got a great price (290e for 3 nights) so were pleased with our stay but would not have been had we paid much more.

I stayed at the Royal York Sun – Wed we had booked our stay on-line though a website. It was a good price but found out that the room was at the back opposite a busy bar and night club. Mon & Tue nights were very loud. We had 2 rooms at this hotel on a Saturday evening, one being a standard twin and one being a 'four poster' room, which was called 'The Queen Adeleide Suite'. Upon arrival at midday we were able to check in early to both rooms which was great and the suite was beautiful, not huge but was beautifully decorated, quite trendy with an old fashioned twist. […] Bathroom was brand new and spotless with a lovely hot shower. The room also had a small balcony which you could stand out on to get some air. Complimentary bottles of water were also supplied. Location was great, only a few moments walk to the pier and nightlife and shops, couldn't fault it. We had an English breakfast included with the suite and the girls in the standard room had continental breakfast included but upgraded to full English for an extra £7 each. Continental included cereals, fruits, toast, Jams and cheeses etc and the English you ordered whatever you like, food was wonderful and good quality. Check out time was midday. Also - parking for 24 hours is best at the NCP which is a 7 minute walk, the hotel gave us a 20% off voucher and we paid £18 for 24 hours parking which isn't bad at all for central Brighton. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating, hotel is a bit drab from the outside but don't let that put you off, I've stayed at home fantastic hotels in my time and this was just as good, everything you need and I will be visiting again soon, can't fault the place. Room was supposed to be 'Deluxe' but it was very small and the television was positioned behind the bed so we couldn't watch it. There were no blinds or net curtains up at the window and the bay window was from floor to ceiling, so when sitting on the bed, we had people on the pavement outside waving to us #we were on the first floor!#.
