My wife and I were cellabrating our 42 years of being married to each other, our stay at the Gris was excellent. This place is historic the resturant was terrific, the entertainment in the bar was great. This is a very old and quaint inn. The rooms are small but what you might expect from this type of accommodations. We found the bed to be too soft, and we had back pain when we woke in the morning. This was a last minute decision to stop enroute but we would love to have had more time here. Essex is a very pretty town and The Griswold Inn is a wonderful place to stay.

The hotel was close to the farm dinner we attended. It was perfect fro what we needed, i.e., not having to drive home late a tonight. I would have liked a coffee maker in our room. I need caffeine before I get dressed! The hotel is very nicely updated, but maintains the historic feel of a hoteol built in 1776

Very helpful. They went out of their way to find me when I left a bag. This is a nice inn, no TV in my room but it was a nice break from TV/Internet.

From the first minute, we were made to feel at home. The room was lovely but we could have done with a step ladder to get up to the bed as it was so high up, good fun though! Essex CT is a charming, historical New England town. The Griswold Inn dining room, wine bar and public areas are similarly charming and historical. In sharp contrast, our room was cramped and charmless. The decor was tired, there were dirty marks on the wall and the bed seemed litttle more than a rollaway on casters (no headboard or frame). You could […] hear every step taken by the guests upstairs and word for word conversations of folks on the sidewalk immediately outside the room (because we were on the street level, we had to keep the shutters closed or people could peer in.) Toilet bags/kits had to go on the floor by the sink as there was nowhere to put them in the tiny bathroom. Quite frankly the room was depressing. Would neither recommend it nor stay there again. Town is small and quaint. Food choices very limited, especially after 7:30ish p.m. Wine bar was excellent and staff very friendly/knowledgeable. Excellent historic inn located in beautiful New England coastal town. Front desk was exceptionally helpfull. Some rooms are very historic and have that charm about them. There may not be a better costal New England town.

The inn is located in downtown Essex which is a cute little town with historical houses. The hotel is very close to the river and yacht harbors, docking sites. Connecticut River Museum is feet away from the hotel. It was a great pleasure to walk around. The hotel is very down to earth and low-key (easy going, casual). Other folks staying at the hotel […] seemed to be very casual, humble people. The hotel's restaurant (tap room) was little too limited in terms of its menu. Restaurant service was not the best either. But this did not detract much from hotel's attractions. My biggest disappointment was the breakfast. Hotel has not aged well, historic integrity certainly lacking in our room--updates were cheap, unauthentic materials and poorly installed. I asked if that meant the bar kitchen and main dining room--the other spots suggested by the clerk--werer closed as well. "Yup." A beautiful old Inn, perfectly kept up, warm hearted staff, delicious food all in a beautiful quintessential New England town along the river. I stayed across the street and up a flight of stairs having been warned about the noise when the band plays in the bar, and did not hear a sound. Excellent stay and I highly recommend it.

As the longest running hotel in the country the conditions of the Inn were minimal. The room was noisey, there was no music piped into the room as advertised and the service staff was anything but warm and friendly. We made a reservation for Sunday brunch. I knew that there was no TV in the room - so I was not disappointed - when I arrived there was the Jazz Brunch in the restaurant - wonderful music great atmosphere - I just checked in and enjoyed the music! The food was great!

We stayed in a suite and it was perfect. My wife and I actually liked the fact that there was no TV in the room. It was a cozy place to stay on a cold night.

The room was very disappointing compared to other historic Inns we've stayed in. The bathroom was tiny - no vanity or anywhere to set toiletries or other personal items. The door to the bathroom was only a folding door - pretty shoddy. The Gris itself is lovely and the food wonderful. Just don't stay there!
