I loved the old style of the property. The rooms were no fuss but still comfy. My room was a bit chilly and i couldnt turn the heating on but they are original single glazed windows in a victorian building so whay did i expect! Concrete floors (even with carpet you can tell) i would bring slippers if youre staying longer than a night! The water pressure was low so the shower wasnt fabulous because the room was so cold it made me feel colder. I would stay again, it was really good value!

What is this place? What is it trying to be and who does it want to attract?! The biggest thumbs up was for the warmth and friendliness of the staff what they lacked in service expertise or indeed any kind of knowledge about the hotel they made up for in personality. We were exiled to the ‘family wing’ as the parents of two under 3’s. Don’t let the grand title fool you, this ‘wing’ was a creepy patched on 70’s (?) extension, across a run down car park and the back of the hotel into a labrynth of clinical feeling corridors up 2 flights of stairs (that was fun with all the detritus of small children and a pushchair… ) to a decent sized but painfully dingey room where the term ‘no frills’ comes to mind. The rooms felt half decorated - minimal storage, flimsy towels, no rugs or art. It was absolutely freezing and of course the radiators didn’t work. The bed was huge though and the bunk bed was one of the highlights of the trip for our 3 year old. The bathroom was cold and basic and the shower was a joke- a cheap chrome head that sprayed a fine, tepid mist over you and took forever to rinse under. So off the the restaurant we went where service was chaotic and the food was over priced and mediocre. Overall I felt like I was at a YMCA hostel and by the end of the trip I was exhausted and desperate to leave to get back to some basic comfort. I don’t think I would return.

2 night mini break.
From the outside the building is amazing. The entrance and first few areas are good but the rooms massively let down this hotel. We had to ask to be moved to another room as after the first night of zero sleep due to what sounded like a cruise ship plant room running all night long we couldnt take anymore. The staff were great and very helpful and happily moved us. The 2nd room was much better. None of the rooms have t.v.'s. They are very small and 2 star style. For the price charged I would have expected better. Shower in forst room went hot cold hot cold but had good pressure (basement level room). 2nd room temperature stayed constant but pressure was not good. Very limited space for hanging or unpacking. Much less than a metre of floor space around the bed.

I was nervous having read some bad reviews but we had a great time. The property grounds are amazing and the walk with the groundsman was really interesting. The room was nice, fairly simple but with a big bed. The food at Elodie was fantastic and I would definitely recomend trying some of the coktails in there. Good option if you want to have a short break near greenery and wildlife.

The person checking us in gave incorrect directions to our room. The building is very old with long hallways, winding stairs and there was no one available to help with luggage. At weekends the dining rooms are busy and noisy. Many young children, loud music, dogs. Sunday night and Monday morning were much more peaceful. Beautiful grounds.

Not a good experience. Two rooms had no water and so the guests had to relocate and then when I woke up the following morning there was no water in my room either. I had to go to one of the other rooms to take a shower.

Faulty Towers, poorly trained staff, shabby hotel
Faulty Towers, avoid at all costs, we checked out 2 hours after checking in despite paying over £250. - Staff are so poorly trained (asked one staff member where the toilets are, they didn’t know; was told I could order food from restaurant to bring to the Lido, walked to the restaurant to be told it’s not possible); - Lido is so busy, you may find yourself queuing for 30 mins + to get in and at least 20 mins to order a drink from the kiosk (only serving wine/beer/soft drink, so no reason the staff could move through patrons quicker. The toilets and changing cubicles were filthy. - Despite being a warm day (32degrees) the bathroom radiator was on full blast and could not be turned off or down - we tried to call reception 3 times to ask about it, no one was answering. When I physically walked out to reception there were several guests all expressing their frustrations regarding various problems they had encountered. When I finally spoke to the austere young woman behind the desk she told me nothing could be done at this stage to turn it off. - newly refurbished rooms are already falling apart - our handheld shower was broken, spraying water everywhere and whilst we were in the room the shampoo dispenser fell the off the wall - windows only open about 5cm, without air conditioning and with the bathroom radiator running on high our room was 34.5d. I was travelling alone with twin 4yo & decided at this point we would all get more sleep at home, so we left.

A Oasis gem in the middle of suburbia. This hotel has a cool edgy vibe about it from the staff to the clientele and the surroundings. The food is amazing and the activities are quite niche also. Definitely eco- friendly but in a really sustainable way. If you’re looking for a wellness hotel for couples or the whole family - look no further. The staff are exceptional and have great customer service skills as nothing is too much trouble with the sole aim of satisfying the customer - and they are so polite & helpful. Would highly recommend.

Not sure what to say about this really - we had stayed in the other Birch previously, so knew the emphasis was making the public spaces special and the bedrooms just had a "light touch" makeover. So, that was fine and we were not surprised when we got here. First impressions were good and on our first evening we had a lovely meal at Elodie (make sure to book well in advance!) and service was great. Friendly and professional. It went a bit downhill on the Sunday when we had dinner at the main restaurant, Vervain. The staff who served us at breakfast were the same staff at dinner and they were also there the next day, so I have no doubt they were worn out, but Vervain was pretty chaotic. The supervisor/maitre'd was wandering around tossing water bottles like Tom Cruise in Cocktail and sitting at people's tables having conversations while the waiting staff were wandering around with huge trays of food, doing a complete circuit of the floor because they did not know where the food was supposed to be delivered, and walking back to the kitchen before a waitress ran after them. This happened at least 6 times. We were told the kitchen was busy, co could we wait 5-10 mins to place an order. It was 30mins before our order was taken yet the people who came in after us ordered and had their food before our order was taken. At breakfast the following morning, our food was finished before the coffee arrived. First world problems I know, but for £230 per night......

Our first visit to Selsdon Birch was pleasantly relaxing even during a busy time The team are amazing and great to speak with. The landscape and surroundings great for nature walking/exploring… and walking of the lovely sticky toffee pudding, we even saw a deer. Great looking pool, will return to try. The night bar vibes (music, ambience) good cocktails set a lovely night tone. Lots of spaces to have a good escape.

Pretty poor
The outside of the hotel (carpark side) is an accident waiting to happen with all the holes everywhere, it’s been left to go to ruin, reminds me of the film, ‘I am a legend’, the rooms are dated and unmaintained, no tv in room, tea coffe and water hiding in the bottom of the cupboard, heating constantly on. lobby and the restaurant/bar area was ok and scenery was lovely outside.. I remember this hotel being exeptiomal years ago, looks like lots of money needs to be spent….

Disappointing
Where to start? We knew it was a soft opening but this hotel is really not ready to receive guests. First impressions in car park were not good. Loose and missing paving stones, half cut grass. It's supposed to be eco friendly but just looks untidy. Reception was good but walk from reception to first floor was definitely not. Unfinished floors, uncarpeted stairs. Room was minimalist to say the least! Bathroom was the smallest we have ever seen. View from our bedroom was a flat roof covered in weeds and rubbish. Bed was comfortable though. At breakfast we were given a reduced menu (we had paid an extra £17.00 per person for this). Full English breakfast is charged at £21.00 plus extra for tea/coffee which you might expect in a London hotel but not in Selsdon! Having paid over £200 for our stay, we have to say this was incredibly bad value for money. We would never book this hotel again and would not be able to recommend to friends.
