Hotel Restaurant Astoria is an absolutely amazing place to stay. I'll break my review down into several areas:
Region: Ulrichen is located along the valley floor, one of a series of picturesque towns located every five minutes or so. There appeared to be a train station in nearly every town, so I would expect that getting around the region by rail is doable. I had a car and I encourage others to have one, too. Within an hour are five of the most scenic mountain passes in the Alps and quite possibly the world. My personal favorite, the Nufenen Pass, starts right from the hotel's driveway.
Service: The service at the hotel was outstanding. Check-in was prompt and courteous, all of my questions were answered, and the host spoke English much better than I speak. Several of the serving staff in the attached restaurant also spoke English and at no point did I feel the burden of a language barrier. Breakfast was filling and other meals in the restaurant were tasty.
Room: I can only speak for my room, but it was fantastic. The room had a very modern decor, but one that still stayed true to its Alpine roots. The wifi was strong in the room, one of the best I've experienced in a mountain hotel. The room was very clean and the bed was surprisingly comfortable as I generally find European mattresses to be a bit too firm for my liking. My room also had a fantastic balcony overlooking the valley to the south and the mountains both in the foreground and the distance.
