There is a school, gallery, coffeeshop, and chapel all within the courtyard or on the different levels of the El Claustro House which I found fun to explore. The hotel rooms are incredibly small and at the top level (3rd floor). I was traveling alone, but the room would have been too small for two people. The staff was not particularly friendly or helpful.

Nice historical multi-use building in need of repairs and updating. Rooms have suffered from shoddy repairs over the years. I’ll fitting doors. Shelves falling off walls. Ceiling caving in. Ants. Tiny light weight safe, not attached to anything! Reception does not answer phone. Light bulb went out and was never replaced. A/C died and had to change room. Rooms were not cleaned properly-had hair. dusty shelves and wardrobes. Broken toilet seat and cover. Nice bathroom sinks but plumbing underneath detached and water leaked all over floor. Eggs for breakfast EVERYDAY! It’s not a buffet, and you only get 2 slices of bread and slivers of fruit. Tables so small in dining room, I had to sit sideways. This could be a really great place with repairs, upgrades and attention to cleanliness and repairs in rooms. Basic and rustic accommodation could be nice. El Claustro has great potential but it needs more vision, repairs, upgrading and investment in the rooms, considering the numerous great alternative hotels. PLUS, I see that many people have complained about the same things, even mentioning specific rooms that I stayed in, but nothing was done.

Very nice feeling to this place.
The place was an awesome place to stay. My wife and I had a small room that used to be a nuns quarters. That is why it's a bit small. Also because it were small the air conditioner gave my wife a cough as it was blowing on her all night. Even though it were small we were able to move the small refrigerator towards the door and open our suitcases so at least it was not as small as the Santa Alejandria Hotel's room we stayed in where we had no room to open things. We spent 3 nights here because it was such a nice historic building that was huge. Had a 3rd story terrace where we could smoke and have a drink. Breakfast was delivered by great staff and was a decent simple breakfast of fruit, coffee, eggs and toast. I'd spend a few days here again just for the excellent character of the place. Don't be put off by the small rooms.

Such a cute little boutique hotel! Only a few hotel rooms and the rest is an art gallery, coffee shop, school, etc. My friend and I had read about the cold water issue so were prepared for that. Although, it wasn’t that much of an issue and actually felt kind of nice since Cartagena is so hot! The room we shared was small but we didn’t mind at all because we weren’t there to enjoy the room, we spent all day everyday out and about exploring. The AC works very well which is a must in Cartagena. Most of the staff are really nice. There was a bit of a language barrier at first but meh let’s be real, that’s to be expected! EXCELLENT location! We were really happy we decided to stay in the old city and found such a good place for so little money. We’re already planning our next trips to Cartagena and will probably stay in a hostel, only to meet more peopl, but definitely would still recommend!

Interesting building (old convent) and the staff was very nice. A bit noisy at night due to students around. The room was clean but tiny - barely squeezed between bed and door. But the main issue: NO HOT WATER. It's very hard to wash your hair in room-temperature water..

Small, noisy room but good air con and service
Really lovely setting, but the building doubles up as a gig venue - so there was a really loud rock gig on when we arrived, and it's a college during the week so no lie-ins as it gets noisy! The room was tiny - bed against the wall and not much space at the other side - so with 2 big bags it was difficult to move around. Having said that, we were out in the daytimes, and breakfast is lovely with great service. The rooms have air con, which is a godsend, and good WiFi.

Love it!
I just got back from Cartagena yesterday and I just fell in love in the city itself and the hotel where we were staying at! If you want to stay in one of a kind type of place look no further because El Claustro is all you are looking for! It's walking distance from everything but still it's in a very quite area of Walled City. Luis and Victor who are working there are so nice and helpful! And the rest of the staff as well but those two are my favorite :-) Rooms are on a smaller side but it's not like you are going to Cartagena to sit in a room! And the hotel is so spacious with all the terraces and lobby area where you can get amazing coffee or buy something from their shop. I really can not wait to go back again! And Luis I really hope to see your movie in theaters soon :-) Gracias por todo Luis! Book this hotel and just enjoy in it's originality!

Lovely experience despite a few problems
The hotel is in an old cloister and I had a double room (used to be one of the nun's cells), which was small but comfortable and with air conditioning. The biggest surprise was that there was not hot water. This may sound strange, but you don't really need hot water as it is so hot outside and the tap water is almost tepid - certainly not cold. The room didn't have a desk, which would have been useful, but there is clearly no room for one. The hotel has a few artist in residence that work in open areas and display their work throughout the hotel. There was piano in one of the display areas and some guests played it beautifully. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my stay as an authentic and unique experience. Definitely recommended.

Interesting stay!!!
This is an old building repurposed as a hotel. The rooms were small, especially the single. But the staff and elegant surroundings more than made up for the small room! The front desk people, Aiden, Jorge and Monika were outstanding and made every effort to be sure I was comfortable. I loved being right in the center of the historic area of Cartagena!
