Clean room in the heart of Tongariro National Park
We stayed here for two nights, before and after our Tongariro Crossing trip. The room was clean and had everything we needed. Check in and communication was straightforward. The ear plugs left on the table came in handy as the property is located next to a fairly busy road and trucks transporting cars stop and do their driver change-over next to it. Also the carpet in the room could do with a refresh as it does not smell very nice.

6/10 Good

Room Basic but OK.
The manager Mary is SO KIND, so helpful! A real pro. I have to give her credit. This place is very disappointing to drive up to. Kind of run down and not what I was expecting. However, we asked and were given a main floor room instead of 2nd floor because of all our luggage. Room #3 is newly remodeled and in perfect condition. It is not plush - very basic. But to a good standard. I would recommend some hooks behind the front door, and in the bathroom to hand things. The bed was actually OK - comfortable. Mary brought us extra blankets which was kind. Unfortunately it was very cold and rainy when we arrived and the weather didn't change. We left the next day, even though we had booked a 2 night stay. We could not handle the weather. Please be aware the weather system here is DIFFERENT than the rest of New Zealand we experienced on our 12 day trip. You really need WARM clothes, gloves, hats, rain gear, warm coat, etc. We were not prepared. Alpine Chalets sounds so cozy, fun, friendly, etc. Instead we found it rather desolate in the Spring. Very basic. I believe this place is getting renovated.

Excellent location. Our unit had very good views of all three volcanoes and we were lucky with the weather. The property is a little bit dated but was worth the price. We would consider returning in the future.

The property is quite old. We were at 2nd floor with the mountain view, which was good. Parking was at rear of buliding, a bit inconvenient. The building is just adjacent to the highway, it was noisy and many big trucks handover drivers.

This is an older very traditional property that is currently undergoing renovations. Although it's very much in need of an update, the manager & staff do a fantastic job keeping it clean, warm & comfortable. The check-in procedure is via looking for your name on a list on the door, with the key being in your room. That's absolutely fine especially if arriving late, but our personal preference is to see a person at check-in. We had a wonderful stay & Mary the manager couldn't have been more delightful 😊

Had everything we needed for a 2 night stay. Good kitchen facilities with elements and lots of utensils including sharp knives. Comfy beds. Wonderful view of the mountains through the window. We had the panoramic room with 2 steep flights of external steps which are rather dangerous and poorly maintained. Would be treacherous in the winter! The outside of the chalets looks poorly maintained and indoors is a bit dated but clean and comfortable.

4/10 Fair

Disappointing stay. We were expecting a fairly basic no frills stay, but the state of the room and the building was really disappointing. Although the bed was comfortable and the views from the property were amazing, there was a big black mouldy patch on the ceiling and the room smelled really damp and mouldy. It wasn’t really easy to leave the windows open to help with this as the bathroom window would only open very very wide and leaving the front window open at night meant traffic noise was too loud. Also there were some very big rusty stains on the outside of the bedroom window and stuff dripping down from somewhere above. Also there was absolutely no sound proofing between rooms and our microwave was quite dirty inside and the kitchen shelves and lamp and surfaces were dusty so the room cannot have been well sanitized between guests. We could hear every footstep taken by the people above, and could hear cupboard doors, cups being put down on the draining board/shelves, the microwave being turned on etc. luckily enough the neighbours were not too noisy in talking/loud tv etc or this would have been a nightmare. The communication was generally very good, but when I asked if a late checkout could be a possibility (as mentioned in the info folder in the room) I didn’t receive any reply.

It was warm and cozy, the beds were comfortable, everything was clean. Some paint work needs to be done on the window sill in the bathroom, there were a few stains on the carpet, the frying pan was buckled and needs replacing, somewhere to put things in the shower would be great. Mary was a wonderfully attentive host. We will definitely be back and will recommend to others. Thankyou!
