At Chungnyeolsa Shrine in Tongyeong, you can find the traces of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who left the greatest legacy as a naval commander during the Imjin War. Admiral Yi Sun-sin, also known as Chungmugong, is a famous general not only in Korea but abroad for his great feat in defending the Kingdom of Joseon from the threat of annihilation. Chungnyeolsa Shrine is the resting place for Admiral Yi's memorial tablet, established to commemorate his valour and loyalty.
Passing through Hongsalmun Gate, which signifies one's transition into sacred land, and going through the main gate with a large Taegeuk inscription brings one to Jeongdang, a place that formerly hosted memorial services for the great admiral. The altar houses Yi Sun-sin's memorial tablet and a majestic painting dedicated to the admiral. Around the altar, a screen called Palsapumdo stands like guards as a tribute to Admiral Yi's achievements. Jeseungdang Shrine is a place where you can feel the valour and anguish of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the hero of the people who saved the country from invasion. It is said that Admiral Yi used Jeseungdang, which means “house of victory,” as his headquarters, and it is said that this was the place where he came up with the strategy that won him the victories that inscribed him into the annals of history.
Passing through Hansanmun Gate, which bears a sign handwritten by Admiral Yi, you will see Jeseungdang toward the front, and a beautiful pavilion on the right-hand side. Here in this pavilion, you have a wonderful view of the sea of Namhae. You can imagine Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who must have stayed up all night in deep thought, sitting alone on the pavilion in front of this beautiful scenery. Jeseungdang Shrine is a must-visit place on Hansando Island, both for its historic value and the scenery.

Miraesa Temple is a quiet and small temple nestled deep at the foot of Mireuksan Mountain in Tongyeong. Although it is not very large, it holds special charm as a dense cypress forest surrounds the temple. It is said that Miraesa Temple is the only temple in the country with cypress trees.
In spring, when new shoots sprout, the refreshing scent of cypress trees spreads far in the wind. When one passes through the cypress forest and crosses the bridge over the pond where tortoise play, one can find a handsome mountain temple. Take a serene stroll through the temple surrounded by the forest to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and heal your mind. Changnyangmyo Shrine is a shrine built to commemorate the fidelity of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who was killed in action after the end of the Imjin War. One can see the respect that the people of Admiral Yi's town had for the man from the history of this shrine, which is said to have been built by the people of Tongyeong to commemorate the Admiral's sacrifice at the end of his long struggle to save his country. At Chungnyeolsa Shrine, another shrine built to commemorate Admiral Yi Sun-sin, a ceremony is held in his memory in spring and autumn, and at Changnyangmyo, a memorial ceremony is held to commemorate the day of his death.
The shrine originally took form as a thatched-roof house, but it was later converted into a tile-roofed house. Today's shrine takes on the form of a Confucian academy with Gojiksa Residence. Even in Tongyeong, where traces of Admiral Yi Sun-sin can be found throughout the region, Changnyangmyo Shrine has a special meaning as the first shrine to commemorate the hero's memory. Anjeongsa Temple
Thousand Year Temple built by a great monk of Silla

Anjeongsa Temple was built by Wonhyo, a great monk from the Silla period. It is a temple with a long history, which earned the temple its nickname of a “Thousand Year Temple.” When you pass Iljumun Gate, which captures the Buddhist teaching to wash away your mortal afflictions and head to the world of enlightenment, you find Anjeongsa Temple settled next to a small valley. The stone bridge that crosses over the valley adds to the charm.
Daeungjeon Hall of Anjeongsa Temple is majestic and splendid, with a hip-and-gable paljak roof and massive columns with a diameter of 80cm. Its bronze bell alone has sufficient historical value to be designated as a National Treasure. In Buddhism, bells are tools that convey Buddha's teachings into the ground through sound. That is why Anjeongsa Temple rings its bell 28 times in the morning and 33 times in the evening, to deliver the words of Buddha throughout the entire world above and under the ground.
