2/10 Poor

Filthy, run down, discriminatory treatment.
We went to the Royal Sunset with 6 of our Tongan young friends who help us at a humanitarian clinic we work in. We are leaving Tonga and wanted to thank them for all they do. We decided to spend the night at the Royal Sunset. The rooms were filthy. The linens were stained and the rooms were unbearably hot. The pool water was brown. Of the 3 kayaks that were available for use, 2 took on water as soon as you pulled them into the ocean. We waited 1 hour and 15 minutes for our lunch and we were served after a group of Caucasian day guests who arrived 45 minutes at the restaurant after we did. Our group was turned away from the snorkelling boat and told to take the next one, even though we were first in line waiting to go. My husband and I just sat and watched in amazement all day as our Tongan young guests were treated to the ultimate in racial discrimination. We left on the 4pm boat going back to Tongapatu and spent a wonderful night at the Tanoa Hotel where our young friends were treated as equal guests to everyone else staying at the resort. Please do not ever go to the Royal Sunset!

The island is beautiful and the trips to the reef to snorkel were fantastic. the food is average, though there is a chef that is a great cook and we enjoyed the fish with papaya sauce and the Lu Ika. The staff are not very attentive and they could have much more activities going on as it tends to be quite boring after a few days. We kayaked a lot and saw much marine life which was great!

Great location!
We stayed in a beautiful bungalow right on a secluded beach! Bed was comfy and room was clean and modern. Food was good, very basic but good. Only gripe was the service, very slow and a few times what we ordered just never turned up at all.

Is your basic resort but with great extras like daily boat trips to snorkel(even on a Sunday), kayaks, and paddle board all included.. A wonderful place to just chill out or hang for a day or two. Sunset is sorta it. Pool is basic but good and great beaches.

Enjoyed our stay here. Lovely Tongan people. Food was great. We were the only guest staying for the first night. Our Fale was nice but the single bed wasn't. Its a shame too see so much rubbish on the beach. But I definitely had a lovely holiday there. :-)

Location is amazing
My husband and I stay at the resort for 5 nights. Our bungalow only 25 metres from the water. We had a large seated veranda with a bench to dry our swim gears and clothes line. Just a few metres into the sea off the beach sand the line of sea grass begins. Plenty of canoes and boards to paddle out on the lagoon. At 2:30pm each afternoon there was the option to go out by boat to a nearby reef for snorkelling. Went off to a different and interesting spot each day. No sign of any life jackets on board. The included breakfast is quite adequate. Plenty of cereals and fruit, toast and cuppas. Dinner courses served up on cold plates - never good. Deep fried food is often rather bland with not much flavour. Caesar Salad was not what it is traditionally supposed to be. Restaurant menu contents only 2 entrees, two mains and two deserts (both being with ice cream), but they are ready to meet your needs if you want something different. So just ask for what you would like if it is not on the menu. With a change in chef later in our week the dinners greatly improved. Recorded music was very relaxing in bar / lounge (at the wi-fi hotspot). In the evenings we were treated to a delightful singing boy-band trio. Staff are very friendly. Great to witness the spectacular evening sunsets and fiery golden clouds over the western ocean. Just sit in your beach lounger and relax. Happy to come here again.

Great location
Rooms on the beach with great views. Staff were really friendly and helpful and the added advantage of being able to take the ferry back to the mainland if you wanted to do a day visit. Most relaxing and restful holiday.

Dream Honeymoon destination, will go back!
We spent 9 days on the Atata island, went there off season, and we had the whole island just for ourselves. They upgraded our fale for free to a beachfront one, we loved it so much! The food was delicious for a good price ($8-9 for a lunch, we could have dinner from the lunch menu as well). Our daily schedule was the following: breakfast, snorkeling in the morning, lunch, kayaking in the afternoon, dinner, sleep... for 9 days, and the island is so beautiful, the reef is so close we didn't get bored! People were very friendly, we visited the village twice, and learned a lot about Tongan culture. We will definitely go back.

Peaceful Resort
A really great stay. The island is about 30min from Nukualofa and seems a world away. We went in low season and only had one other person sleeping at the resort so we had the run of the facilities. The food at the restaurant was a bit limited due to the small amount of people there but were flexible in trying to give us a choice of different meals. Service was very good and we the got in some very nice snorkeling just two minutes boat ride from the island.

Lovely beachside location but I think the cost was higher than it should have been for a hotel of this basic standard. My shower didn't work properly.
