Disappointing stay at historic San Diego hotel
Booked a room for New Years Eve with my wife. I am long time resident of San Diego and was excited to stay at this historic hotel for the first time. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. The hotel definitely looks and feels tired, and staff is not particularly friendly. We did receive a coupon for two free drinks at the hotel bar, but the lobby and bar area were so cold. The bartender was kind enough to position a little heater next to my wife but we both still had to keep our jackets on. The bar would be very charming if it wasn't an ice box!
The room was small and in need of renovation. The bed was OK, but pillows were hard. My wife and I both woke up with sore necks. The shower is a small bathtub with a shower curtain. The towels were like sandpaper and that is a pet peeve. This is something you find at a cheap motel. There was just a cheap one cup plastic coffee maker with paper cups. No drinking glasses or coffee cups. Cheap, cheap, cheap all the way. Also, no restaurant, room service, or even coffee in lobby.
I don't normally write reviews, but this was such a disappointment. It is shame what has become of this beautiful historic hotel. With some investment and the right management, it could return to its former glory and be a real gem in the Gaslamp of SD.
