Whether it was because I had just come from 15 consecutive nights in more traditional (& yes boring) hotels, my first impression was that original build/snag list was “unfinished” (+ because AC/DC, Cold Play were filling out hotels I didn’t have choices) & I didn’t check the style or design but I knew that it hadn’t been completed very long-I just had the feeling that they had been denied a hotel licence and they then went ahead with an hostel licence in the interim - because the design is bare-bones minimalist (albeit bright, funky and novel) & blot of student ages as guests. The original building, an old telephone exchange for Telecom Éireann - Rezz manages to use this space perfectly and superglue their own identity onto every available surface, with their unique branding and signage, some on-the-fly arts installations making it overall more POST and less INDUSTRIALIST. The rooms, again, were bare-bones making maximum use of some right areas, with great big comfy beds.
Ok the down side: my first night sleep was impossible with their own bar making most of the noise but then at 4.20am an employee in one of the other bars on the lane decided the next hour was the perfect time to move 1,000’s of bottles from one large plastic bin structure to another. After this the heavy delivery refuse trucks arrived and I was convinced one had impacted with the building.
Overall, this would be a MONUMENTAL hotel for a student/pub crawl/stag or hen party but not for someone with jetlag.
