I stayed at The Gate Hotel Tokyo for a week in December, and it was filled with ups and downs.
The good parts: The staff is very friendly and service minded, and the location is impeccable. Truly one of the best spots to live in Tokyo. The bed is super comfortable and the housekeeping is so sweet. However I will most definitely not be staying here again.
The reason why not, is that during my stay, there was a fire and I was did not receive enough information and the safety measures were subpar, to say the least.
I woke up to the fire alarm going off in Japanese, and several messages from the staff. Only in Japanese. Fortunately I do understand a bit of Japanese and I understood it that I was to stay put in my room and not use the elevator.
I stayed put and after a while, I heard a message I couldn't understand, so I decided to go out and possibly evacuate. The hallway was filled with smoke and I got really scared. I remembered that he said not to use the elevator so I found the emergency stairs and ran down.
Outside I saw firemen and the police. The police told me I could use the elevator, so I confused by the mixed messages. I went up and waited a bit in the lobby. No one from the hotel was outside, no one informed us about what was happening, and when I asked if it was dangerous to inhale the smoke the receptionist said she didn't know because she wasn't a professional.
Later we got a letter in our room saying there was a fire, and that was that. Completely absurd.
